Fire Compartmentalization
Fire and smoke barriers that divide a building into protected compartments, keeping people and critical spaces safe.
About Fire Compartmentalization
Compartmentalization is the idea behind passive fire protection: divide a building into sections with fire-rated walls, floors, and ceilings so a fire that starts in one area stays there. It buys time for evacuation, limits damage, and protects the spaces a building can't afford to lose.
A compartment is only as strong as its weakest opening. We look at the whole barrier, including penetrations, joints, and gaps above the ceiling where barriers are often left incomplete, and close it up so it performs as designed.

What We Handle
Barrier assessment
Walk-throughs of rated walls, smoke barriers, and shafts to identify breaches and missing protection.
Barrier completion
Sealing openings, joints, and penetrations so each compartment maintains its rating from slab to deck.
Critical-space protection
Electrical rooms, server rooms, stairwells, and equipment areas that need to stay isolated.
Ongoing maintenance
Inspection and repair after renovations and trade work breach existing barriers.

Fire Compartmentalization FAQs
What's the difference between firestopping and compartmentalization?+
Firestopping seals individual penetrations and joints. Compartmentalization is the bigger picture: making sure the entire rated barrier, every wall, floor, and opening, works together to contain fire and smoke.
How do barriers get compromised?+
Most often by later trade work. New cable, pipe, or duct gets run through a rated wall and nobody seals the opening. Over time a building can end up with hundreds of breaches hidden above the ceiling.
Can you survey an existing building?+
Yes. We can walk your rated barriers, document what we find, and give you a clear scope to bring them back into compliance.
